Post-secondary education may not be for everyone, but for those who think it is for them, trying to decide on a school or program from thousands of choices can feel quite daunting. Sometimes, it helps to take a look at the paths that other people have taken. Here's what some famous people have done with their lives.
Did you know:
·Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize-winner, obtained an undergraduate degree in economics from Macalester College and a Master of Science degree from MIT.
·Tom Hanks, Academy Award-winning actor, studied theatre in Sacramento at California State University.
·Filmmaker Spike Lee received a degree in mass communications from Morehouse College.
·Star Wars creator George Lucas studied film at the University of Southern California.
·Diana Krall, famed jazz musician, attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She has also received an honourary doctorate from the University of Victoria.
·Steve Nash, NBA All-Star and member of the Phoenix Suns, majored in Sociology at Santa Clara University.
·Natalie Portman attended Harvard.
·JK Rowling, author of the popular Harry Potter books, majored in French at The University of Exeter.
·Meg Ryan studied journalism at New York University.
·David Suzuki, scientist and environmental activist, attended Amherst College, where he obtained an honours degree in biology, and later carried on to the University of Chicago, where he earned a Ph.D. in Zoology. In addition to this, he holds sixteen honourary doctorates from universities and colleges around the world.
·Billionaire Donald Trump began his post-secondary education at Fordham University, but transferred to the University of Pennsylvania and obtained an economics degree.
·Denzel Washington, Academy Award-winning actor, obtained a degree in journalism and drama from Fordham University and then later attended the American Conservatory Theater.
·Robin Williams, comedian and Academy Award-winning actor, studied political science at Claremont's Men's College before focusing on drama in New York at The Juilliard School.
Did you know that these people left high school before graduating: Pierce Brosnon, Neve Campbell, Jim Carrey, Sean Connery, Ozzy Ozbourne, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlize Theron, Uma Thurman, and Elijah Wood?
So, does having a formal education guarantee that you’ll find fame and fortune? No. But continuing your studies may give you the chance to know the "box" so that you can think outside of it. Everybody has been educated in one way or another—some more, some less. But, consider this:
